Columbia University announced the Pultizer prize winners on Sunday, honoring journalists across the country for their work. Some of these winners and finalists used DocumentCloud to host primary documents that were foundational to their reporting.

ProPublica’s Kavitha Surana, Lizzie Presser, Cassandra Jaramillo and Stacy Kranitz won the Public Service award for their reporting on pregnant women who died after doctors delayed urgently needed care. The reporting follows the overturning of Roe v. Wade and the fear among doctors of violating vague “life of the mother” exceptions in states with strict abortion laws.

The reporters used DocumentCloud to share numerous primary source documents, including a letter from the Department of Public Health and the Senate Committee Report on Emergency Reproductive Health Care Post-Dobbs.

ProPublica also included governors’ responses to ProPublica’s questions on maternal health in states with strict abortion laws, including Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp and Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

Finalists for the 2025 Pulitzer Prize in Explanatory Reporting, ProPublica reporters Annie Waldman, Duaa Eldeib, Max Blau and Maya Miller were also recognized for their work on how insurance companies limit mental health services to people seeking care.

The reporters used DocumentCloud to upload company documents from United’s subsidiary, Optum, that has used an algorithm-driven practice to reduce coverage for mental health services in order to increase savings for the company.

DocumentCloud offers a growing range of tools to support news organizations across the country and the world. This includes our Add-Ons platform, which can do everything from help detect improper redactions to ensure materials remain available through decentralized storage technologies like IPFS and Filecoin.
